Children in foster care often face the challenge of frequent moves, which can deepen feelings of isolation and neglect. Some are required to leave their homes with only a few personal items—or sometimes with nothing at all—especially if they come from situations of neglect.
At Ability to Assist, we’ve noticed that many of these children continue to wear untidy clothes even in foster care, often appearing unkempt. While foster carers receive an allowance for clothing, it’s often not enough to provide the high-quality items that help children feel excited about or proud to show off to their friends.
To provide continuous support, we match a registered community caregiver with a younger child than their own.
This allows the caregiver to hand down clothing as both their own child and the foster child grow, ensuring that the foster child has well-fitting clothes throughout their childhood.
We also go the extra mile to find items based on a child’s personal preferences. If a child loves Paw Patrol or has a favorite color like purple, we make it our mission to source those specific items. We believe in helping each child express their own sense of style and identity through clothing, giving them a sense of individuality and confidence.
Unlike other charities with retail outlets, we maintain minimal stock and distribute donations promptly upon receipt. We do not charge for any donated items, and your contributions cover transportation costs across Sydney, ensuring essentials are provided completely free of charge.
Every year, Australians waste an alarming amount of food and clothing,
contributing to environmental issues in our oceans and landfills. What you might discard could be a lifeline for someone else.
Join us in making a positive impact by recycling and rehoming essential items to those who need them most. Your generosity helps reduce waste and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children. Thank you for your support!
How You Can Make a Difference.
At Ability to Assist, we request donations from our registered community caregivers for only the items currently needed to avoid waste.

Help us create lasting change for children in foster care by donating today!
Hi, I’m Deb, the owner of Ability to Achieve and Ability to Assist.
With years of experience supporting children in foster care, I’ve dedicated my career to making a meaningful difference in their lives.
Recently, our work with ACYP and Zoe Robinson during the special inquiry into ACA placements reignited my passion for finding new ways to support these children. Zoe spoke with several children across NSW, interviewing them about their experiences, particularly in emergency accommodation.
One thing that truly struck me was the deep sense of isolation these children often expressed. Many believed they had to rely solely on themselves because they felt no one else cared.
This powerful realisation inspired us to create a new program, designed specifically for kids in foster care. Our mission is to show these children that there are people in their community who genuinely care and are ready to support them.
You can read more about the findings in the ACYP report linked below.
Donating toys can bring joy and happiness to children who may not have the same opportunities as others.
It's a way to ensure that every child gets to experience the magic and excitement of receiving a gift during special occasions. Your donation can make a real difference in brightening a child's day and creating cherished memories that they will always remember.
Additionally, by donating toys, you contribute to fostering a sense of community and compassion, showing children that they are cared for and valued by others.
Your generosity can truly make a positive impact and bring smiles to many young faces during festive seasons and birthdays alike.
"Your one-time donation is crucial to our operations. It covers transport, purchasing Christmas presents, and cleaning received items, ensuring we can continue to support those in need."
